About the Program

Wen Chen was born and university-educated in China, and now, a trained scientist with a PhD from Cal Tech, lives right there in California. In China -- Power, Propaganda, and the New Global Reality, she puts the modern country squarely under the microscope, laying bare its internal censorship and repression, along with the global impact of technologies like TikTok and WeChat and programs like the Belt and Road Initiative.

Most important, Wen Chen has a deeply personal story to tell. Drawing on first-hand experience, she’ll explore the intersection of culture, identity, and resistance as she has lived it. And, she’ll dramatize how Chinese individuals and communities are pushing back through art, media, and truth-telling.

About Our Speaker

Wen Chen was born in the shadow of the Cultural Revolution -- a time when intellectuals were persecuted, families were torn apart, and traditional culture was nearly erased. Her own father, trained to be a nuclear physicist, was sent to work in coal mines for the “crime” of being educated, leaving her family wary of the very path Wen would ultimately pursue. Yet against the odds, she excelled.

Having experienced firsthand the effects of propaganda and censorship, she has made it her mission to speak out. Since 2012, she has delivered more than 700 talks, offering rare insight into Chinese history, culture, and human rights -- shaped not by theory, but by lived experience. Clear-eyed, courageous, and deeply personal, Wen Chen brings a perspective that that will affect us all.
